We all know the scenario. An over-enthusiastic oarsman sets out on a blustery day and is suddenly engulfed by a powerful current and swept away. Emergency services are notified, either via a flare or a call from a concerned relative, and brave coastguards are sent to save the day. The oarsman is helped safely back to shore and the rescuer is labelled a hero.

Everyone is a winner.” After spending a few hours volunteering in the Red Cross charity shop in Milford Haven, Mercury reporter Fraser Watson realised his perception could not be further from the truth.
